Knee replacement (arthroplasty)

A knee arthroplasty does consist of metal components that replace the worn natural joint surface. These components are similar in shape to the natural surface and are usually implanted on the bone-surface using bone-cement (PMMA). In-between those metal components a highly sophisticated “plastic” layer (polyethylene) is placed to imitate the original cartilage surface and reduce friction between the components.

Knee replacement surgery is performed in patients whose life-quality has significantly decreased because of pain, deformity and loss of function. Indication for surgery is very individual and must be thoroughly discussed with the patient. It should not be performed in patients with moderate arthritis, patients with severe comorbidities and patients with an ongoing joint infection.

Knee arthroplasty can be partial or total. The knee articulation consists of three different parts or compartments. The inner part (medial), the outer part (lateral) and the frontal part (anterior). A total knee arthroplasty (TKA) replaces all three parts. A partial arthroplasty covers only one ore different combinations of these three parts. The most frequent partial replacement is the medial unicompartmental arthroplasty (UNI). Clínica Adler does have a vast routine and experience in performing those surgeries and can therefore offer the best solution for every patient.

There are no strict age limitations to this procedure. What does matter is the patient’s pain and necessity. If the indication is correct a TKA can successfully be performed in young but also in elderly patients.
